China Hospitals Set Up 'Homework Zones' For Sick Students Amidst Pneumonia Outbreak
Hospitals in China have established dedicated "homework zones" for children combating respiratory illnesses amid a surge in pneumonia cases, as reported. The country is grappling with a rise in respiratory ailments among children due to a convergence of known pathogens, marking its initial winter after lifting Covid-19 restrictions. Hospitals in Beijing and nearby cities are reportedly grappling with an overwhelming number of cases.

Health authorities have consistently affirmed the absence of novel viruses, attributing the cases to familiar culprits like influenza, rhinoviruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and bacteria such as mycoplasma pneumoniae, known for lung infections.
Across social media, widely circulated images and videos depicted children engaged in homework while undergoing intravenous treatments in hospitals. State broadcaster CCTV highlighted instances in Jiangsu, Anhui, and central Hubei provinces, where youngsters were furnished with desks and chairs for studying during their treatments.
Clad in masks, children diligently completed schoolwork, assisted by their parents, within specially designated study zones within hospitals.
A concerned father relayed, "My child had to manage homework during this period to avoid an overwhelming workload upon returning to school after recovery," as reported by the broadcaster.
Social media critique targeted parents for subjecting their unwell children to study, with one user on X (formerly Twitter) expressing, "This photo is genuine, and children doing homework in hospitals is commonplace in China. We live in a country where extreme academic pressure is the norm."
Another comment highlighted, "Some hospitals even reserve a specific area for these students who 'enjoy' studying, which they openly promote and boast about."
