China Grapples With Mysterious Pneumonia Outbreak, WHO Seeks Details On Circulating Pathogens

The World Health Organization (WHO) has requested more information from China regarding an outbreak of influenza-like illnesses predominantly affecting children. Hospitals across the country are reportedly experiencing an influx of young patients exhibiting symptoms of respiratory infections.

During a press conference on November 12, Chinese officials from the National Health Commission acknowledged an increase in respiratory illnesses nationwide, attributing it to the recent relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions.

In response to the situation, WHO has sought additional details pertaining to the circulation of known pathogens, including influenza, SARS-CoV-2, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and Mycoplasma pneumoniae, as well as the extent of overcrowding within the healthcare system.

Key Points Regarding the Outbreak:

ProMed, a global disease surveillance network, issued an alert concerning the "undiagnosed pneumonia" in children. ProMed had previously alerted the world about SARS-CoV-2 in December 2019.

Taiwanese news outlet FTV News reported that hospitals in Beijing and Liaoning have been overwhelmed by a surge of pneumonia-stricken children.

The geographical distance between Beijing and Liaoning (approximately 800 kilometers) suggests that the mysterious pneumonia is not a localized outbreak.

While details about the outbreak remain scarce, sources cited by FTV indicated that affected children present with high temperatures and pulmonary nodules, but not with coughing symptoms.

ProMed's email alert described scenes of overcrowded hospitals, with Dalian Children's Hospital's lobby filled with sick children receiving intravenous drips. Additionally, long queues were observed at traditional Chinese medicine hospitals and central hospitals. A staff member from Dalian Central Hospital remarked, "Patients have to wait in line for 2 hours, and we are all in the emergency department and there are no general outpatient clinics."

The outbreak has reportedly impacted schools, with teachers also falling ill. Some schools have been forced to close. The exact start date of the outbreak remains unknown.

ProMed's note highlighted the widespread nature of the undiagnosed respiratory illness, emphasizing the unusual speed at which such a large number of children have been affected.

Epidemiologist Eric-Feigl-Dingh compiled a detailed analysis of the situation, sharing videos from hospitals and messages from locals on social media platform Twitter.

A report by China Daily acknowledged Beijing's entry into the peak season for respiratory infection diseases, attributing it to the co-circulation of multiple pathogens. However, the report made no mention of a mysterious outbreak.

Experts have emphasized the need for more information to accurately assess the situation, as it could be a new outbreak, a resurgence of walking pneumonia, or a surge in respiratory illnesses due to China's first winter without stringent COVID-19 lockdown measures.
