Chicago Mass Shooting: 1 Killed, 19 Injured As Juneteenth Celebration Turns Violent

At least one person was killed and 19 others injured in shootings in Illinois, Missouri and Washington state in a deadly night of gun violence.

The incident occurred in a parking lot in a strip mall in the town of Willowbrook shortly before 12:30 am, Battalion Chief Joe Ostrander with the Tri-State Fire Protection District told WGN, a Chicago-area news station.

"There were at least 20 individuals shot. One victim is deceased," said Eric Swanson, deputy chief at the DuPage County sheriff's office. "The motive behind this incident is unclear. ... We transported numerous victims from the scene. Others just walked into area hospitals."

"It was supposed to be like a Juneteenth celebration; we just started hearing shooting, so we dropped down until they stopped. They just kept going. After that, we literally scattered away," witness Markeshia Avery said.

"We were all just out, and, next thing you know shots just kept going off; everybody ran, and it was chaos," another witness said.
