Man of Chechen Origin Stabs Teacher to Death in Northern France

On Friday, a man of Chechen origin who was under surveillance for suspected Islamic radicalization by French security services stabbed a teacher to death at his former high school in Arras, northern France. The attack also critically wounded three other people and is currently being investigated by anti-terror prosecutors amidst soaring global tensions over the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

Chechen origin stabbing teacher high school

The incident occurred nearly three years after another teacher, Samuel Paty, was beheaded near a Paris area school by a radicalized Chechen. Speaking at the site of the attack in Arras, President Emmanuel Macron said that France had been "hit once again by the barbarity of Islamist terrorism." He further stated that "terrorism has hit a school again and in a context that we're all aware of."

Victim Identification

A colleague identified the deceased as Dominique Bernard, a French language teacher at Gambetta-Carnot school which enrolls students aged 11-18. According to Macron, Bernard "stepped in and probably saved many lives". However two others - another teacher and security guard are fighting for their lives.

Suspect Arrested

The suspected assailant was arrested along with several others. Identified as Russian national of Chechen origin born in 2003 he had been closely watched since summer via tails and telephone surveillance but recent checks found no wrongdoing. Sliman Hamzi an officer on scene reported hearing him shout "Allahu akbar," or "God is great" in Arabic before slitting victim's throat.

President's Visit

Macron visited Arras accompanied by interior and education ministers where he paid respects to Bernard’s body lying outside the school covered with blanket surrounded by forensic experts working around it. He also met students from adjacent building. He revealed that police thwarted an "attempted attack" in another region of France after this stabbing.

Increased Threat Alert

Following the attack, French government asked authorities to heighten vigilance at all schools and increased threat alert level allowing for larger police and military deployments. The suspected assailant's radicalization had been flagged by teachers "a few years ago," according to Julie Duhamel, an official with Unsa teachers union.

The Assailant’s Family History

The suspect’s telephone conversations showed no indication of an impending attack leading intelligence officers to conclude he decided suddenly on Friday to act. His younger brother was taken into custody while his older brother arrested in 2019 for planning a thwarted attack is serving a 5-year prison term for terror offences.

Echoes of Paty’s Slaying

Martin Doussau, a philosophy teacher at Gambetta-Carnot, said the attacker appeared to be hunting specifically history teachers reminding him of Samuel Paty's slaying by another Chechen radicalized youth who was later shot and killed by police.

Tensions Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict

This incident came amidst heightened tensions over Hamas' attacks on southern Israel and Israel's military response which have resulted in civilian casualties on both sides. In response to rising antisemitic acts, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin has ordered local authorities to ban all pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

In conclusion, Macron announced that the school would reopen as soon as Saturday morning urging people of France "stay united". He emphasized not giving into terror saying "We must not let anything divide us, schools and transmission of knowledge are at heart of this fight against ignorance." This horrific event serves as yet another grim reminder of the challenges facing nations in dealing with radicalization and maintaining security.
