Chalo Lakshwadeep: Maldives Tourism Industry Condemns Ministers' Remarks, Recalls India's Support In Crises
Following the contentious remarks made by three Maldivian ministers about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India, sparking a dispute between the Indian and Maldivian governments, the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) criticized these comments. MATI emphasized India's crucial role as a neighboring ally, acknowledging its historical support as the primary responder during various crises faced by the Maldives.
In a statement released on Monday, MATI highlighted, "India is one of our closest neighbors and allies. India has always been a first responder to various crises throughout our history, and we are immensely grateful for the close relationship that the Government as well as people of India have maintained with us."

The rift originated when PM Modi promoted Indian islands during a snorkeling trip in Lakshadweep, suggesting Indians visit these destinations instead of traveling abroad. The Maldivian ministers' objectionable remarks in response fueled controversy, provoking outrage among Indians. This led to numerous cancellations of Maldives bookings by Indian citizens and sparked an online campaign urging others to boycott trips to the Maldives.

In a significant setback to the Maldives' tourism sector, EaseMyTrip, a prominent travel company, suspended all flight bookings to the island nation. Nishant Pitti, the co-founder and CEO, announced the suspension via X (formerly Twitter), expressing solidarity with the nation: "@EaseMyTrip has suspended all Maldives flight bookings." The company also initiated the #ChaloLakshadweep campaign to promote tourism in India's Lakshadweep islands.
Shortly after this announcement, MATI underlined India's substantial contribution to the Maldives' tourism industry, acknowledging India as a consistent and significant supporter. They highlighted Indian government assistance following the reopening of the Maldives' borders post-COVID-19, underscoring India's consistent position as one of the top markets for the Maldives. MATI expressed a desire for a sustained, peaceful, and enduring relationship with India, hoping for continued close ties between the two countries for generations to come.
