Factors Influencing the Race

Several factors contribute to the closeness of these races. Economic concerns are at the forefront, with Trump leading among voters who feel financially worse off since the pandemic and among non-college-educated White voters. This group, a significant demographic in these states, perceives Trump as better for working-class opportunities.

In contrast, Harris performs better on issues related to the middle class and housing affordability. Voters view her as having policies that could potentially make housing more affordable compared to Trump. However, perceptions vary; many non-college-educated White voters believe Harris favours the interests of Black and Hispanic people over White individuals.

Union Workers and Cognitive Health

Union workers' support is also closely contested, despite Harris having a notable advantage in representing their interests. The actual voting preference among union households remains tight, indicating that these voters weigh multiple factors beyond just union issues.

Heading into the debate, a significant shift has occurred from previous matchups. Harris is now perceived as having better cognitive and mental health to serve as president compared to Trump, a reversal from earlier national polls where President Biden was viewed more favourably in this regard, as reported by CBS.

Campaign Rhetoric and Social Media Impact

The impact of campaign rhetoric and social media is mixed. A large portion of voters find Trump's comments and social media posts insulting towards Harris, yet a quarter remain supportive of Trump despite these views. Conversely, Trump supporters view Harris' remarks as insulting, though to a lesser extent.

Perceptions and Excitement

Harris appears to benefit from being seen as more "mainstream" compared to Trump's "extreme" positions. This perception aligns with a broader public demand for a president who represents mainstream values rather than extreme views. Harris also leads in partisan excitement; Democrats show higher enthusiasm for her campaign compared to Republicans' enthusiasm for Trump.

Polling Details

The CBS News/YouGov survey, conducted from September 3-6, 2024, included representative samples of registered voters in Michigan (1,086), Pennsylvania (1,085), and Wisconsin (958). The margin of error for the surveys is ±3.7 points for Michigan, ±3.5 points for Pennsylvania, and ±4.0 points for Wisconsin, as per media report.

As the debate looms, these battleground states will be critical in shaping the direction of the presidential race, with both candidates facing a closely contested path ahead.
