The "distressing" footage depicting the mid-air drama in her Extra 330LX aircraft was shared by Narine Melkumjan on social media over the weekend.

The incident occurred during her second-ever aerobatic training flight several years ago when the aircraft's canopy unexpectedly burst open and shattered while in flight.

Melkumjan, visibly distraught, struggled to maintain control as she grappled with the sudden loss of the protective barrier. The harrowing experience involved frantic efforts to manage the aircraft's controls amidst the noise and severe wind beating against her face, as reported by New York Post.

In her own words alongside the 4-minute clip, Melkumjan described the flight as profoundly distressing, recounting challenges such as difficulty breathing, impaired visibility, and overwhelming noise. She revealed that it took nearly 28 hours for her vision to fully recover after the incident.

Aerodynamically, she faced buffet and controllability issues, particularly in maintaining power while compromising her vision and breathing to stabilize the aircraft. Reflecting on the incident, Melkumjan admitted that the ordeal could have been prevented had she conducted proper pre-flight checks.

Specifically, she noted that the canopy locking pin had not been secured, a crucial oversight she failed to detect during her checks. Additionally, she acknowledged the mistake of resuming training immediately after recovering from COVID-19, without allowing her body adequate time to regain full strength, as reported by New York Post.
