Catholics Advocate for Environmental Protection at Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro
Brazilian Catholics created an eco-friendly carpet at the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. This initiative, ahead of UN climate talks in the Amazon, aimed to highlight environmental protection. The carpet, part of the Corpus Christi feast, was crafted from about 460 kilos (1,014 pounds) of recycled plastic caps. This event underscores the sanctuary's commitment to raising awareness about environmental issues.

Cardinal Orani João Tempesta led a ceremony at dawn, before tourists arrived. The site overlooks Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain. The celebration paid tribute to Pope Francis and his encyclical, Laudato Si. In this document, he urged a cultural shift to address economic systems harming the environment and exploiting the poor.
Environmental Initiatives at Christ the Redeemer
Marcos Martins, an environmental manager at the sanctuary, explained that the caps could have polluted the environment but were instead used for this project. "It's the circular economy: we take the material, we're reusing it here and then we're going to reuse it again with an exhibition," he said. This approach highlights the importance of recycling and sustainability.
The sanctuary has been using its influence to promote environmental awareness. Earlier this month, it hosted workshops and discussions on preserving nature. The statue itself is located in Tijuca National Park, further emphasizing its connection to environmental conservation.
Climate Challenges in Brazil
Brazil has faced numerous environmental challenges recently. Severe droughts in the Amazon, wildfires in Pantanal, and flooding in southern regions have been significant issues. This week, heavy rains in Rio Grande do Sul resulted in two fatalities, following last year's record flooding.
Carlos Lins, marketing director at the sanctuary, noted that upcoming events like COP30 and recent UN Ocean Conference align with Christ's role as a spokesperson for environmental issues. He stated, "Nothing makes more sense than Christ being a great spokesperson for this issue."
Scientists attribute these extreme weather events to human-induced climate change. Such occurrences are becoming more frequent and severe due to global warming.
The use of recycled materials for religious celebrations serves as a reminder of our shared responsibility towards ecology. As Rio's archbishop remarked, these efforts reflect Christ the Redeemer's commitment to environmental care.
