Canada Detains Trio for Khalistan Activist Nijjar's Murder Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Canadian authorities have recently taken into custody three individuals linked to the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh activist and known Khalistan separatist, in Surrey last year. This development marks a significant turn in the investigation that has strained relations between Canada and India. The arrest of these suspects comes amidst allegations by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding the involvement of Indian agents in Nijjar's murder, claims that India has fervently denied.

Trio Arrested for Nijjars Murder

The tension between the two nations escalated following Trudeau's public statements in September last year, suggesting a potential link between Indian government operatives and the killing of Nijjar. India, in response, labeled these allegations as baseless and politically motivated. The recent arrests shed light on the ongoing investigation into Nijjar's death, who was fatally shot outside his place of worship in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18, 2023.

Court documents reveal that Karanpreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karan Brar are facing charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Nijjar's assassination. The indictments suggest that the conspiracy spanned across Surrey and Edmonton from May 1, 2023, until Nijjar's death. Furthermore, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reports indicate that authorities are probing potential connections to three other homicides in Canada, including the tragic death of an 11-year-old boy in Edmonton.

According to sources close to the investigation, the arrested individuals were part of a hit squad performing various roles such as shooters, drivers, and spotters on the day Nijjar was killed at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara. These arrests were executed during coordinated police operations across at least two provinces.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are anticipated to officially announce these arrests and provide further details on their findings. This case has not only sparked diplomatic tensions but has also highlighted concerns over political space being afforded to separatist movements within Canada. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized how such incidents not only affect India-Canada relations but also foster a climate conducive to violence and criminality within Canada itself.

Prime Minister Trudeau's recent comments at a Khalsa Day event in Toronto, which was attended by pro-Khalistan supporters, reiterated his concerns over Nijjar's killing and its implications for Canada-India relations. India's strong reaction included summoning the Canadian deputy high commissioner to express its protest over pro-Khalistan slogans raised at the event attended by Trudeau.

In retaliation to Trudeau's allegations last year, India had requested Canada to reduce its diplomatic presence in India, leading to Canada withdrawing 41 diplomats and their family members. The incident had also led to a temporary suspension of visa services for Canadian citizens by India, which were resumed after several weeks.

This ongoing saga underscores the complex dynamics between Canada and India, with both nations grappling with issues related to separatism, extremism, and diplomatic relations. As investigations continue into Nijjar's killing and potential links to other crimes in Canada, the international community watches closely how these developments will influence the already tense relationship between these two countries.
