Canadian Police Detain Alleged Hit Squad in Khalistan Separatist's Killing

Canadian authorities have recently detained members of what is believed to be a hit squad, reportedly assigned by the Indian government to assassinate Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey last year. This development has further strained the already tense relations between India and Canada, following accusations by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding India's alleged involvement in Nijjar's murder. India has categorically dismissed these allegations as baseless and politically motivated.

Arrests in Khalistan Separatist Killing

According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), this investigation is also exploring connections to three other homicides in Canada, including the tragic death of an 11-year-old boy in Edmonton. The suspects are thought to have undertaken various roles such as shooters, drivers, and spotters during the execution of Nijjar at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia. These arrests were made across at least two provinces, highlighting a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are anticipated to release further details about these arrests and their investigative efforts. This comes after Prime Minister Trudeau reiterated concerns over Nijjar's killing during a Khalsa Day event in Toronto, attended by pro-Khalistan supporters. Trudeau's remarks have been met with criticism from India, with External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemning the political space afforded to separatist and extremist ideologies in Canada.

India's response to Trudeau's comments included summoning the Canadian deputy high commissioner to express strong disapproval of pro-Khalistan slogans raised at the event attended by Trudeau. This incident has not only impacted diplomatic relations but also led to India temporarily suspending visa services for Canadian citizens, a decision that was later reversed.

Nijjar, a 45-year-old Canadian citizen and a prominent Khalistani separatist wanted in India on terror charges, was shot dead on June 18, shortly after evening prayers. His assassination has become a focal point of contention between India and Canada, with both nations grappling with the diplomatic fallout. Following Trudeau's allegations last year, India demanded Canada reduce its diplomatic staff in the country, leading to Canada withdrawing 41 diplomats and their family members from India.

This series of events underscores the complex dynamics between India and Canada, particularly concerning the issue of separatism and extremism. Both countries continue to navigate through these diplomatic challenges while addressing internal security concerns and international relations.
