Canadian Authorities Charge Three Indian Nationals in Khalistan Activist's Murder

In a significant development that has further strained the diplomatic relations between India and Canada, Canadian police arrested three Indian nationals on Friday. These individuals are believed to be part of an alleged hit squad, reportedly directed by the Indian government, to assassinate Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey last year. This incident has escalated tensions following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations against India's involvement in Nijjar's killing, which India has categorically dismissed as baseless and politically motivated.

3 Charged in Activists Murder

The arrests were made nearly a year after Nijjar, a 45-year-old Canadian citizen, was fatally shot outside his gurdwara in Surrey, B.C., on June 18, 2023. The accused, identified as Karanpreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karan Brar, have been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, according to court documents. Reports suggest that these individuals entered Canada on student visas but are suspected of operating under the directives of Indian intelligence agencies.

Canada's Public Safety Minister Dominic Leblanc refrained from confirming any direct links to the Indian government but expressed full confidence in the capabilities of Canada's security forces and the ongoing RCMP operations. The indictments reveal that the alleged conspiracy spanned across Surrey and Edmonton from May 1, 2023, until Nijjar's death. Furthermore, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported that police are investigating potential connections to three additional murders in Canada.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have been closely monitoring the suspects for months, leading to their arrest during operations conducted in at least two provinces. This police action underscores the seriousness with which Canadian authorities are treating this case.

Relations between India and Canada have been tense since Trudeau's public comments on Nijjar's assassination last year. India has criticized Canada for providing a platform for separatism and extremism, which it believes not only affects bilateral relations but also fosters a climate of violence within Canada itself. In response to Trudeau's remarks at a Khalsa Day event attended by pro-Khalistan supporters, India summoned the Canadian deputy high commissioner to express its strong protest.

The aftermath of Trudeau's allegations saw India requesting Canada to reduce its diplomatic presence in the country, leading to the withdrawal of 41 Canadian diplomats and their families from India. Additionally, India temporarily suspended visa services for Canadian citizens, a decision that was later reversed after several weeks.

This incident highlights the complex dynamics of international relations and the challenges faced by nations in addressing issues of terrorism and political extremism within their borders and abroad. As investigations continue, both countries remain at a critical juncture, navigating through diplomatic tensions while addressing concerns over security and political ideologies.
