Canadian Police Charge Three Indian Nationals in Khalistan Separatist Nijjar's Murder

In a significant development that has further strained the diplomatic relations between India and Canada, Canadian authorities arrested three Indian nationals on Friday. These individuals are suspected of being part of an alleged hit squad, reportedly directed by the Indian government, to assassinate Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey last year. This incident has escalated tensions following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations against India's involvement in Nijjar's murder in September of the previous year, which India has vehemently denied, labeling the accusations as baseless and politically motivated.

3 Charged in Nijjars Killing

According to CTV News, citing a senior government source, the individuals arrested have been identified as Karanpreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karan Brar. Each faces charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Nijjar's death. Court documents reveal that Nijjar, a 45-year-old Canadian citizen, was fatally shot outside his gurdwara in Surrey, B.C., on June 18, 2023. Global News reported that the suspects were Indian nationals who had entered Canada on student visas but are suspected of operating under instructions from Indian intelligence.

The charges against Brar include involvement in a murder that took place in Surrey on June 18, 2023, along with a conspiracy to commit murder charge dating back to May 1, 2023, in Edmonton and Surrey. The indictment suggests that the conspiracy spanned both locations from May 1 until Nijjar's assassination. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has reported that police are investigating potential connections between the suspects and three additional murders in Canada, including the tragic death of an 11-year-old boy in Edmonton.

On the day of Nijjar's killing at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, members of the alleged hit squad are said to have performed various roles including shooters, drivers, and spotters. These arrests were made during police operations across at least two provinces. Sources indicate that these individuals had been identified by investigators months prior and were under close surveillance.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are expected to provide further details on their investigation following these arrests. This comes after India's strong rejection of Prime Minister Trudeau's recent comments on Nijjar's killing. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal criticized Trudeau's remarks for providing political space to separatism and extremism within Canada, which he argued not only affects India-Canada relations but also fosters a climate of violence detrimental to Canadian society itself.

India's response to Trudeau's allegations included summoning the Canadian deputy high commissioner to express a strong protest over pro-Khalistan slogans raised at a Khalsa Day event attended by Trudeau among other leaders. Following these developments, India requested Canada to reduce its diplomatic presence in India for parity, leading to Canada withdrawing 41 diplomats and their family members from India. Amidst these diplomatic tensions, India had temporarily suspended visa issuance to Canadian citizens, a service which was resumed several weeks later.

This incident underscores the complex dynamics between India and Canada, particularly concerning the contentious issue of Khalistan separatism. Both nations now face the challenge of navigating these diplomatic waters carefully to address their respective concerns while maintaining bilateral relations.
