Canada's Opposition Leader Poilievre Cancels Diwali Event, Hindus Slam

The decision by Canada's opposition leader, Pierre Poilievre, to call off the Diwali festivities at Parliament Hill in Ottawa has sparked a wave of criticism from the Indian community. This action is amid growing diplomatic strains and deteriorating relations following Canada's accusations against Indian diplomats for allegedly targeting supporters of Khalistan.

Shiv Bhasker, the event's organiser and president of Overseas Friends of India Canada (OFIC), expressed his disappointment in a letter to Poilievre. He emphasized that Diwali is not just vital for the Indo-Canadian community but also represents Canada's multicultural ethos.

"This event was meant to be a joyous occasion to honour Diwali, a festival that is not only deeply significant to the Indo-Canadian community but also emblematic of the multicultural spirit that Canada prides itself on. However, the sudden withdrawal of political leaders from this event, prompted by the current diplomatic situation between Canada and India, has left us feeling betrayed and unjustly singled out," Bhasker penned, pointing out the unfairness of letting international disputes affect Canadian citizens of Indian heritage.

Following the outcry, the Overseas Friends of India Canada apologised for the event's cancellation and announced a new celebration date on November 23, to be held at Cedar Hill Golf and Country Club in Nepean. This move indicates an effort to amend the disappointment caused by the initial cancellation and to uphold the tradition of celebrating Diwali within the community.

The call for an apology extends beyond the event's organisers to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's opposition. The Indian community demands not just an apology but a tangible plan to combat the systemic racism and bias that this incident has brought to light.

"More than just words, we expect a clear and actionable course of action to be laid out to address the systemic racism and bias that led to this decision.
