Canada Hospital Killed Him: Wife Alleges Negligence After Husband’s Death

The death of 44-year-old Indian-origin worker Prashant Sreekumar in Edmonton has triggered sharp questions about emergency care at Grey Nuns Hospital, Canada, after family members alleged staff left Prashant waiting for hours with severe chest pain before treatment that came moments before his death.

According to the family, Prashant, a father of three, reached Grey Nuns Hospital on December 22 with intense chest pain but was kept in the waiting area for at least eight hours, despite repeated complaints and rising blood pressure, and died almost immediately after finally entering the emergency room.

Grey Nuns Hospital emergency wait and cardiac arrest timeline

Prashant was at work in Edmonton when the chest pain began. A client drove Prashant to Grey Nuns Hospital in southeast Edmonton, where staff registered Prashant at triage, carried out an ECG, and reportedly gave Tylenol, before instructing Prashant to sit in the waiting room while pain continued.

Family members say the hospital team told Prashant there was “nothing of significance” after the initial checks. Prashant stayed in the triage and waiting area through the afternoon and evening. When Prashant was finally called into the emergency room, around eight hours after arrival, Prashant collapsed and died roughly 10 seconds later.

Family’s allegations against Grey Nuns Hospital emergency care

In a video recorded beside Prashant’s body, Prashant’s wife accuses Grey Nuns Hospital of failing to treat serious warning signs, including intense chest pain and sharply rising blood pressure, and blames the hospital’s response for Prashant’s death at 44, describing the waiting period as desperate and unsupported.

"He was sitting in the triage from 12.20 onwards till about, I would say 8.50 or till about 8.50 in the night. He was sitting in the triage complaining of constant chest pain. His blood pressure (BP) constantly kept on rising with the last reported blood pressure of 210. He was taken inside. He was only prescribed Tylenol during the entire waiting time that he was outside. And he was not given help. They said that chest pain is not considered acute," Late Prashant's wife says in the video.

Prashant’s father, Kumar Sreekumar, rushed to Grey Nuns Hospital after hearing about the chest pain. While Prashant waited for care, Prashant reportedly told Kumar, "Papa, I cannot bear the pain." Kumar stayed outside, also waiting, until staff brought the family inside shortly before Prashant collapsed.

"After sitting maybe 10 seconds, he looked at me, he got up and put his hand on his chest and just crashed," his father was quoted as saying by Global News. The family’s account highlights both the length of the wait and the lack of intervention during the period before Prashant’s cardiac arrest.

The Grey Nuns Hospital has not commented on the clinical details of Prashant’s case, citing privacy rules, but issued a short statement through Global News saying, "There is nothing more important than the safety and care of our patients and staff," while also offering condolences to Prashant’s family and friends over the loss.
