Canada Explores Joining AUKUS, Signaling Strategic Shift in Indo-Pacific

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has shown interest in Canada joining AUKUS, a defense partnership led by the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. This alliance, established in 2021, initially aimed to create nuclear-powered submarines for Australia. It's now looking to grow, with Japan recently being invited to join. This expansion raises questions about AUKUS's future role in the Indo-Pacific region and whether it could become a new NATO-like entity there.

Trudeau's consideration of joining AUKUS comes as Canada evaluates the need for nuclear-powered submarines to protect its sovereignty in the Arctic. This is part of a broader defense policy review that Canada has undertaken, focusing on enhancing security in the North. The review suggests significant investments in submarines, long-range missiles, and early-warning aircraft. Trudeau's move towards AUKUS, especially after Japan's invitation, suggests a potential for a larger alliance.

Canada Eyes AUKUS Membership

Meanwhile, the Quad, another strategic grouping involving India, Australia, Japan, and the US, has been inactive for nearly ten months with no future meetings planned. This inactivity has sparked speculation about its relevance and future. The United States seems to be shifting its focus away from the Quad, which India has insisted is not a military alliance and has expressed no interest in joining AUKUS.

AUKUS is part of a trio of alliances formed in recent years to counter China's influence, including the Quad and Chip-4 (involving Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the US). The US has played a key role in these alliances but has tailored its involvement based on its interests. While it revitalized the Quad with India's help, India was notably excluded from Chip-4. This selective approach by the US highlights its strategic priorities in the region.
