Canada Expels Six Indian Diplomats Amid Ongoing Diplomatic Tensions Over Nijjar Case
Canada has expelled six Indian diplomats, citing a targeted campaign against its citizens by agents linked to the Indian government. This move coincided with India's decision to expel six Canadian high commission members in Delhi. The expulsions are tied to the investigation into the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia, last June.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) gathered evidence linking Indian government agents to the Nijjar case. Canada requested India waive diplomatic immunities to facilitate interviews, but India declined. Consequently, Canada issued expulsion notices. "Keeping Canadians safe is the fundamental job of the Canadian government," said Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly.
Diplomatic Relations and Security Concerns
Canada and India have shared over 75 years of diplomatic ties, with significant historical, business, and cultural connections. Despite these ties, Canada's priority remains the safety and security of its citizens. The RCMP's Integrated Homicide Investigative Team arrested four individuals in May 2024 for their alleged roles in Nijjar's murder.
RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme highlighted ongoing threats linked to Indian government agents. He warned of widespread violence and public security risks. The RCMP has charged many individuals with crimes like homicides and extortions, noting threats to South Asian community members and pro-Khalistan supporters.
Ongoing Investigations and Diplomatic Tensions
Global Affairs Canada announced the expulsion of six Indian diplomats due to their alleged involvement in activities against Canadian citizens. The RCMP's multidisciplinary team uncovered extensive criminal activities orchestrated by Indian agents, posing serious threats to public safety in Canada.
India's response included withdrawing its high commissioner and other diplomats from Canada, strongly denying Ottawa's allegations. A Canadian official stated that evidence was presented to India last week, but India rejected the claims. Since Nijjar's killing, several individuals of Indian descent have been warned about potential threats from Indian agents.
The relationship between Canada and India has been strained since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations last September regarding Indian agents' involvement in Nijjar's death. New Delhi dismissed these accusations as baseless. Despite diplomatic tensions, dialogue continues through Canada's High Commission in Delhi.
Canada remains committed to safeguarding its citizens while upholding sovereignty and the rule of law. Efforts continue to ensure public safety amid ongoing investigations into threats linked to foreign agents operating within its borders.
