Canada Elections 2025: PM Modi Congratulates Liberal Party's Mark Carney; Eyes Better India-Canada Relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated Liberal Party's PM candidate Mark Carney for his party's victory in Canada's general election 2025. Liberal Party won 167 seats, while the Conservative Party secured 145 seats in the 343-member House of Commons.

Extending good wishes and expecting him to work for people's welfare, PM Modi shared a post on micro-blogging site X, that reads: "Congratulations @MarkJCarney on your election as the Prime Minister of Canada and to the Liberal Party on their victory. India and Canada are bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership and unlock greater opportunities for our people."

As per the voting data, Liberals garnered about 43% of the national vote but might not achieve the 172 seats needed for a majority.

Canada-India Relations

Mark Carney's election is anticipated to improve relations between Ottawa and New Delhi. Ties had deteriorated under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after allegations involving Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen. Carney, an economist and former governor of both the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada, has indicated that he values the relationship with India highly.

Carney emphasized the significance of Canada-India relations on various levels, including personal connections due to deep ties among Canadians, as well as economic and strategic aspects. He described this relationship as "incredibly important" and signaled his willingness to reset ties with New Delhi upon returning to power.

Global Attention on Canadian Elections

The Canadian general election attracted international interest following US President Donald Trump's trade war with Canada. Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian imports, prompting Ottawa to respond with proportional measures. Additionally, Trump's provocative remarks about making Canada a 51st US state became a significant topic during the election campaign.

If Carney's government falls short of a majority, it will need cooperation from other parties to pass budgets and legislation. This situation could lead to negotiations and compromises within Canada's political landscape.
