Canada Election Results 2025: Mark Carney’s Liberals Surge Ahead As Initial Results Roll In

Canada Election Results 2025: Voters across Canada headed to the polls on Monday to elect all 343 members of the House of Commons, with the next government set to be formed by the party that secures a majority. The Liberal Party, led by newly appointed Prime Minister Mark Carney, and the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, are locked in a crucial battle to determine the country's leadership at a pivotal moment.

Polling has now closed in most parts of the country, and early projections show an initial lead for the Liberal Party under Prime Minister Mark Carney. According to CBC's latest figures, the Liberals have won 20 seats and are leading in 24 others. Meanwhile, Pierre Poilievre's Conservatives have secured 7 seats and are ahead in 32 more. Yves-François Blanchet's Bloc Québécois is leading in 11 constituencies, while Jagmeet Singh's NDP is ahead in one.

Mark Carney, 60, who only recently replaced Justin Trudeau as prime minister last month, has never before held elected office. A former investment banker and central bank governor in both Canada and the United Kingdom, Carney has pitched his global financial expertise as key to shielding Canada's economy from US pressures. He has vowed to counter Trump's tariffs, boost internal trade, and expand Canada's economic partnerships beyond the United States.

Opposing him is Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, 45, a seasoned career politician who has focused his campaign on addressing domestic issues, including those that contributed to Trudeau's declining popularity toward the end of his decade-long tenure.

Until recently, polls had suggested the Liberals were headed toward a historic defeat. However, a surge of nationalist sentiment sparked by President Trump's rhetoric appears to have shifted the momentum in Carney's favor. Final polls before voting day showed a tight race but indicated that Carney held a slight edge over Poilievre.

To form a majority government, a party must secure at least 172 seats in the House of Commons.

Preliminary election results are expected late Monday night or early Tuesday morning, local time. Canadian news outlets, including CBC, are expected to project a winner once a sufficient number of votes have been counted, based on data from Elections Canada, the federal body that oversees elections.

As the votes are tallied, Canadians - and the world - are closely watching how the country will chart its course amid rising external challenges and internal shifts.
