Canada Deportations Surge: Indians Top The List For Forced Removals

The number of Indian nationals being forcibly removed from Canada is on track to reach a record high, surpassing last year's figures and continuing a steady increase since 2019.

According to the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA), as of July 28, 2025, a total of 1,891 Indians had been removed from the country. This marks a sharp rise from 625 removals in 2019, less than a third of the 2024 total. Last year, 1,997 Indians were deported, placing India second after Mexico, where 3,683 citizens were removed. Colombians ranked third, with 981 forced removals.

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the surge during an event in Toronto, affirming that his government is prioritizing the deportation of foreign criminals. "We plan to make the process faster, with better resources and improved tracking," he said, adding that these measures are part of broader reforms to Canada's immigration system.

The spike in removals has coincided with rising anti-immigration sentiment in Canada. On October 10, Peel Regional Police (PRP) announced their collaboration with the Peel Crown Attorney's Office and the CBSA to determine whether removal of accused foreign nationals may be pursued as part of judicial proceedings. This statement followed the arrest of eight men-Sumanpreet Singh, Gurdeep Chattha, Jashandeep Jattana, Harman Singh, Jasanpreet Singh, Manroop Singh, Rajbir Singh, and Upinderjit Singh-linked to the alleged theft of 450 pieces of mail valued at over CA$400,000. The group faces a combined total of 344 charges.

Indians also top the countrywise inventory for removals in progress, with 6,837 nationals, followed by 5,170 Mexicans and 1,734 U.S. citizens. Out of a total inventory of 30,733 cases, 27,103 involved refugee claimants. Indians represent the largest cohort among asylum seekers, highlighting the growing focus on immigration enforcement against specific nationalities in Canada.
