26-Year-Old Charged for Igniting Destructive California Wildfire with Firework
A 26-year-old man has been charged with starting a wildfire in California by throwing a firework from a car window. Spencer Grant Anderson, from Oroville, was charged after weeks of surveillance, according to the Butte County District Attorney's Office. The Thompson fire burned nearly 6 square miles (15.5 square kilometres), destroying 13 homes and damaging others in the northern Sacramento Valley.

Anderson appeared in court to face charges including arson of an inhabited structure, arson of forest land, and arson causing multiple structures to burn. He was jailed without bail. "It was a long investigation, there was a lot moving parts to it," said Larry Pilgrim, Anderson's attorney, to The New York Times. "He is just being accused at this point."
Fire Ignition and Investigation
The fire started on July 2 around 11 am when temperatures were over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 Celsius), with low humidity and high winds. Authorities identified Anderson the next day after spotting a car at the fire's origin. Surveillance revealed that a flaming object had been thrown from the vehicle.
Warrants were issued on August 22, leading to Anderson's arrest. During questioning, he allegedly admitted to buying fireworks in Oroville and testing one by throwing it out of his car window. Pilgrim did not immediately respond to messages from The Associated Press seeking further comments.
Legal Proceedings
Anderson is scheduled to return to court on Wednesday for further proceedings, including setting dates for entering a plea and pretrial hearings. The Butte County District Attorney's Office stated that the investigation involved many moving parts and took considerable time to conclude.
The fire caused significant damage in the Oroville area of the northern Sacramento Valley. It scorched nearly 6 square miles (15.5 square kilometres), destroyed 13 homes, and damaged several other structures.
Authorities have been thorough in their investigation, which included continuous surveillance of Anderson. They built their case by concluding that a flaming object was thrown from his vehicle, leading to the devastating fire.
The incident highlights the severe consequences of reckless behaviour during hot, dry, and windy conditions. The community continues to recover from the extensive damage caused by the Thompson fire.
The case against Anderson underscores the importance of adhering to fire safety regulations, especially during extreme weather conditions. The legal process will determine his culpability in this tragic event.
The ongoing legal proceedings will provide more clarity on Anderson's actions and their impact on the community. The outcome will be closely watched as it unfolds in court.
Anderson's next court appearance will be crucial in determining the course of his trial and any potential penalties he may face if found guilty of the charges against him.
