"Police Officer Resigns After Racist Text Messages Surface"

A California police officer involved in a controversial shooting has resigned after racist text messages he wrote were discovered.

In a recent development, Mark McNamara, a police officer from the San Jose Police Department in California, resigned following the discovery of racist text messages he wrote. These messages not only demonstrated racial bias but also made light of a controversial shooting incident he was involved in last year.

police officer resigns

McNamara joined the San Jose Police Department back in 2017 and tendered his resignation last week after being informed about an investigation into his offensive texts. The news was confirmed by Police Chief Anthony Mata to the Bay Area News Group. According to Mata, McNamara was already under investigation by the department's internal affairs unit for an unrelated matter when these racially biased text messages came to light.

The Uncovered Text Messages

A dossier of text messages revealed McNamara discussing with two unnamed recipients about the shooting incident that took place on March 27, 2022. He shot and wounded Kaun Green, who is Black while quelling a fight at an eatery near San Jose State University. Green had disarmed one person involved in the fight and was backing out of the front door with a confiscated handgun held up when he was shot by McNamara.

In one message dated just a day after this event, McNamara seems to refer to Green using a racial slur. Other subsequent texts from June 2023 appear to have been sent during his interview with City Attorney's Office and Green's legal team who sued over this shooting incident.

Racial Animus Behind The Shooting?

Adanté Pointer from Lawyers for People firm representing Kaun Green stated that these uncovered text messages strongly indicate that racial animus drove his client’s shooting incident. However, no contact information could be found for Officer McNamara as on Sunday.

Condemnation From Police Officers Association

The San Jose Police Officers Association President Steve Slack expressed deep concern over the incident. He stated that this investigation into McNamara's text messages is a stark reminder that not everyone possesses the moral compass necessary for being in law enforcement. He went on to condemn this unacceptable behavior in the strongest possible terms.

In conclusion, the resignation of Mark McNamara has brought forth serious concerns about racial bias within police forces and highlighted the need for stringent measures to ensure such incidents do not occur in future. The impact of his actions extends beyond his individual case, affecting trust in law enforcement and emphasizing the necessity for thorough checks within these institutions.
