Cable Car Incident in Turkiye Results in One Fatality and Multiple Injuries
In a tragic incident on Friday, a cable car accident in southern Turkiye resulted in one fatality and seven injuries. The mishap occurred at the Tunektepe cable car facility, located just outside the Mediterranean city of Antalya, around 6 p.m. during the bustling Eid al-Fitr holiday. Among the injured were two children, highlighting the severity of the accident that took place on the final day of a three-day public holiday in Turkiye, commemorating the end of Ramadan.

The deceased was identified as a 54-year-old Turkish man by the state-run Anadolu Agency. The injured included Turkish citizens and one Kyrgyz national, underscoring the international impact of this unfortunate event. The Tunektepe cable car is a popular attraction that offers rides from Konyaalti beach to a restaurant and viewing platform at the summit of the 618-metre (2,010-feet) Tunektepe peak, managed by Antalya Metropolitan Municipality.
Emergency response teams were promptly dispatched to the scene to provide medical treatment and facilitate the evacuation of those injured. Visuals from the site showed the damaged cable car hanging precariously from dislodged cables against the rocky mountainside, with medical personnel attending to the wounded. Additionally, passengers in 35 other cable car pods found themselves stranded mid-air as engineers worked tirelessly to restore the system.
This incident has cast a shadow over what is typically a festive period for families visiting coastal resorts to celebrate Eid al-Fitr. The accident not only raises concerns about the safety measures in place at such tourist attractions but also highlights the swift response of emergency services in times of crisis. As investigations continue, this tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the importance of stringent safety protocols in preventing future accidents.
