Tragic Bus Plunge in St Petersburg, Russia Claims 7 Lives
In a tragic incident on Friday in St Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city, a bus veered off a bridge and plunged into the Moika River, resulting in the death of seven individuals. The Investigative Committee, Russia's premier criminal investigations body, confirmed the fatalities. While the exact number of injured passengers has not been disclosed, the emergencies ministry reported that six individuals were extracted from the bus in critical or serious condition.

According to Russian news outlets, the city bus was carrying 15 passengers when it broke through a barrier and fell into the river. Remarkably, six passengers managed to escape the water unaided. Surveillance footage released by Russian media captured the bus speeding, executing a sharp turn onto the bridge, colliding with another vehicle, and subsequently breaching the barrier to fall into the Moika River.
St Petersburg authorities have revealed that the bus's owner had previously been fined 23 times for various infractions. It is noted that private companies operate the majority of the city's bus services. Following this incident, the bus driver was detained by police. Reports from Russian media include a statement from the driver's wife, indicating that he was compelled to work a morning shift immediately after completing a 20-hour shift the day before, with little to no rest in between.
A criminal investigation has been initiated to probe into alleged traffic violations and the provision of unsafe travel services. This incident has raised concerns about the safety regulations and enforcement within St Petersburg's privately operated bus services.
