Passenger Train Strikes Boxcar in Buenos Aires, Dozens Injured

On Friday, a significant train collision occurred in Argentina's capital, resulting in at least 60 people sustaining injuries. The incident involved a passenger train colliding with an empty boxcar on the tracks, leading to a derailment. This event took place around 10:30 am as the train was en route from Buenos Aires to the northern suburbs, specifically on a bridge within the fashionable Palermo neighborhood. The cause of the boxcar's presence on the tracks remains unclear, prompting an investigation by authorities.

Train Collision in Buenos Aires Injures Many

Buenos Aires Mayor Jorge Macri, present at the crash site, acknowledged the lack of detailed information regarding the accident's mechanics. He commended the rapid evacuation efforts that ensued. The city's emergency services, led by Director Alberto Crescenti, engaged in a rescue operation that saw 90 individuals extricated from the train's wreckage. This included dramatic rescues of passengers trapped in the derailed boxcars, some of whom were lowered by rope from the highway overpass.

The aftermath saw dozens receiving treatment at the scene, with at least two individuals airlifted to hospitals due to severe injuries such as chest trauma and broken bones. According to Crescenti, about 30 passengers were transported to medical facilities with moderate to serious injuries. Eyewitness accounts from dazed passengers highlighted the sudden and violent nature of the collision, which occurred after an unexpected stop on the bridge.

In response to this incident, Trenes Argentinos, the Argentine rail authority, announced a suspension of service on this popular rail line. Efforts were immediately initiated to secure the crash site area, with local residents urged to keep their distance to facilitate emergency response operations.

This recent collision has reignited concerns over rail safety in Argentina. A series of train accidents between 2012 and 2014 resulted in over 50 fatalities and hundreds of injuries. Investigations into these past incidents revealed that outdated infrastructure and operational errors had significantly compromised safety. These findings had previously led to governmental investments in new safety and braking systems aimed at preventing such tragedies.
