Witness Account

Julian Rodriguez, a worker at a nearby deli, described the scene as he witnessed it from behind the counter. He heard people screaming about a building collapse and rushed outside to see debris and a smoke cloud filling the street. The exposed interiors of the apartments revealed beds, doors, closets, lights, and other personal belongings, creating a startling sight.

Fire Department Response

Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh reported on X, formerly Twitter, that there were no reports of injuries as of 5 pm. Firefighters and search dogs thoroughly searched the building, located near the Morris Heights neighborhood, to ensure that no one was trapped inside.

Extent of the Collapse

A corner of the six-story building stood with its walls sheared off and floors sagging, with a heap of debris spilling out into the street. Twisted and jumbled metal, likely from scaffolding around the building, was visible amidst the rubble. Inside the exposed apartments, beds, portraits, and furniture were precariously positioned, highlighting the severity of the collapse.

Emergency Response

WABC-TV video footage captured firefighters using high ladders to shine bright lights into apartment windows. Drones were also deployed to survey the scene from above. Firefighters worked diligently to remove rubble in buckets and used circular saws to cut through the collapsed scaffolding. However, they later pulled back from the rubble for safety reasons.

Building Investigation

Inspectors from the Buildings Department were present at the scene to investigate the cause of the collapse. The phone number associated with the building's owner went unanswered. According to Buildings Department records, the structure dates back to 1927 and houses approximately four dozen apartments.
