BRICS 2024: PM Modi Meets Xi Jinping, Pushes For Peace At Indo-China Border, Mutual Trust And Respect

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping recently held their first formal bilateral meeting since 2019. This significant encounter took place in Kazan, Russia, during the BRICS Summit. The meeting marked a potential turning point in India-China relations, which had been strained due to a military standoff in Ladakh. The conflict arose from China's "unilateral" actions along the Line of Actual Control.

Breakthrough in Diplomatic Talks

The discussions between Modi and Xi occurred shortly after a diplomatic breakthrough aimed at restoring the status quo to pre-May 2020 conditions. This development followed both diplomatic and military negotiations, which sought to de-escalate tensions that had persisted since the Galwan Valley clash four years ago. The agreement on patrolling arrangements along the disputed border was a positive step towards reducing troop presence.

During their meeting, PM Modi expressed optimism about improving bilateral ties. He stated, "Excellency, I am happy to meet you, and like you mentioned, this is a formal meeting between us after five years. It is my belief that the importance of India-China relations is not just for the citizens of our two countries, but also very significant for peace, stability, and progress for the entire world."

President Xi echoed similar sentiments by highlighting the importance of cooperation between China and India. He remarked, "Mr Prime Minister, it is my great pleasure to meet you here in Kazan. It is the first time for us to have a formal (bilateral) meeting in five years time."

Previous Interactions

Before this meeting, Modi and Xi had only brief interactions since the 2020 Galwan incident. These encounters took place during international summits such as the G20 in Bali and BRICS in Johannesburg. However, these were not comprehensive discussions addressing trade or economic issues.

The outcome of this bilateral meeting could signal whether trade and economic relations will normalise between India and China. For four years, there were no direct flights between the two countries. Additionally, visas for Chinese technicians required extra security checks, while investments from neighbouring countries faced stringent vetting processes.

Both leaders acknowledged that their nations are at crucial stages of modernisation. They emphasised the need for increased communication and cooperation to manage differences effectively. By doing so, they aim to set an example for unity among developing countries and contribute positively to international relations.
