Breyten Breytenbach, Influential South African Poet and Anti-Apartheid Activist, Dies at 85
South African writer and poet Breyten Breytenbach, known for his opposition to apartheid, has passed away in Paris at the age of 85, according to his family. Breytenbach was a prominent figure in Afrikaans literature, a language derived from Dutch settlers, and was a vocal critic of South Africa's former white minority rule.

His literary contributions spanned poetry and autobiographical works, with notable titles like "The True Confessions of an Albino Terrorist" and "A Season in Paradise." These works explored themes such as exile, identity, and justice. His family highlighted these themes in a statement released on Sunday.
Legacy in Literature and Activism
Breytenbach's influence extended beyond literature; he was also a painter and activist. His work resonated both within South Africa and internationally. Born in the Western Cape province in 1939, he spent significant time abroad but maintained strong ties to his homeland.
In the 1970s, Breytenbach was imprisoned for seven years on charges of treason after returning from exile in Paris. During his time abroad, he joined Okhela, an ideological faction of South Africa's African National Congress, reflecting his commitment to political change.
Family and Personal Life
Breytenbach is survived by his wife Yolande, daughter Daphnée, and two grandsons. Despite living much of his life outside South Africa, he remained deeply connected to his roots through his work and activism.
His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in South African literature and activism. Breytenbach's legacy will continue to inspire future generations through his fearless exploration of complex themes that challenged societal norms.
