Brexit: PM May’s deal trashed again; MPs to vote on no-deal Brexit today

London, March 13: British Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal hit the wall yet another time as an overwhelming majority of the MPs rejected it on Tuesday, March 12, just 17 days before the UK is set to withdraw from the European Union.

Even though the margin of defeat was lesser this time (149 votes) compared to that in January (230 votes), yet it was enough to put the entire procedure in jeopardy. May said the parliamentarians will not vote on whether the UK should leave the EU without a deal and if that too fails, they will get a vote on whether Brexit should be delayed.

While May came under criticism of the Opposition Labour, she made a last minute plea to the MPs to back her deal after she received legal assurances on the Irish backstop from the European body.

She managed to convince around 40 MPs bit the task to reverse the 230 votes that went against her deal in January was herculean.

On Wednesday, March 13, the MPs will vote to decide whether the UK should exit the EU without a deal or not, the PM said. If that verdict goes against too, the MPs will vote Thursday, March 14, on whether Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty - the legal mechanism that takes the UK out of the EU on March 29 - should be extended.
