Tragic End for Migrants Drifting to Amazon: Solemn Burial in Brazil

In a solemn ceremony held in Belem, the capital of Para state, Brazil, the bodies of nine migrants were laid to rest. These individuals were discovered on April 13 by fishermen off the coast of Para, aboard a boat adrift in the northern Amazon region. The decomposed state of the bodies indicated they had been at sea for some time. Documents found within the vessel pointed to the migrants hailing from Mali and Mauritania, with their journey having commenced from Mauritania after January 17.

Migrants Buried After Amazon Ordeal

The burial was a secular event, coordinated by several organizations including the UN Refugee Agency, the Red Cross, and the International Organisation for Migration, alongside Brazilian police, navy, and civil defense agencies. As tropical rain poured down, attendees observed a respectful silence while the coffins were interred.

Found aboard the 12-metre (39-foot) rustic blue-and-white fiberglass boat were 25 raincoats and 27 mobile phones, suggesting that the original passenger count was significantly higher. This has led officials to speculate that individuals of other nationalities might have been among those deceased. The boat, lacking a motor, tiller, or rudder and shaped like a canoe, is reminiscent of Mauritanian fishing vessels often used by migrants attempting to reach the European Union via Spain's Canary Islands.

An Associated Press investigation in 2021 uncovered that at least seven boats from northwest Africa had reached the Caribbean and Brazil, all carrying deceased individuals. To date, none of the victims from this latest tragedy have been identified. However, arrangements for their burial have been made in such a way as to allow for possible exhumation should families wish to repatriate their loved ones.

Brazil's criminology institute in Brasilia is conducting forensic examinations on the remains. Meanwhile, the Federal Police are liaising with Interpol and international bodies to share any findings. This incident comes amid a reported 500% increase in migration attempts from Africa's northwest coast to the EU this year, predominantly originating from Mauritania. The perilous journey across the Atlantic is fraught with risks including strong winds and potential months adrift at sea, often resulting in dehydration and malnutrition.

The surge in migration is attributed to various factors including unemployment, climate change impacts, insecurity, and political instability. Despite these dangers, over 14,000 African migrants have successfully reached the Canary Islands this year. In an effort to curb this trend, the EU and Mauritania inked a €210 million (USD $225 million) agreement in February aimed at combating people smuggling.

With hundreds of West African migrants still missing, families in Mauritania are desperately seeking information about their loved ones. Bachirou Saw from Mauritania shared his personal anguish over losing one nephew to the perilous crossing while still searching for another who vanished in January. Saw has taken proactive steps to dissuade potential migrants through a WhatsApp group that highlights the dangers of such journeys.

Despite his efforts, Saw's family remains tormented by uncertainty. His sister epitomizes this despair as she clings to every update, her health deteriorating with worry. This narrative reflects a broader dichotomy within communities torn between joy for those who make it to Europe and grief for those lost along the way.
