Ibirapuera Park Lake in Sao Paulo Turns Bright Green Due to Drought and Algal Blooms
The lake in Sao Paulo's Ibirapuera Park has recently turned green, drawing mixed reactions from visitors. This change is due to an algal bloom, high temperatures, and a lack of rainfall, according to City Hall. The low water level complicates the removal of algae by pumps. The situation reflects broader climate issues affecting Brazil, including a severe drought.

Many residents of Sao Paulo, known as paulistanos, frequent Ibirapuera Park for exercise and leisure. The park is centrally located and hosts attractions like the Afro Brazil Museum and the Sao Paulo Art Biennial pavilion. The lake is often referred to as "the park's soul," attracting families for picnics and sports on weekends.
Impact of Drought on Sao Paulo's Water Bodies
The green hue of the lake is not an isolated incident. Earlier this month, the Pinheiros River in Sao Paulo also turned green due to an algae bloom. Additionally, smoke from fires in the Amazon rainforest has caused the city's skies to appear gray. These events highlight the severe environmental challenges facing the region.
Sidney Cardoso, a 49-year-old photographer, expressed surprise at the lake's current appearance. "We know that it's different when it's totally full," he remarked. This sentiment echoes the concerns of many who have noticed changes in their local environment due to climate conditions.
Local Reactions to Environmental Changes
Beside the lake on Thursday, Silvia Alves, a nutritionist who regularly exercises there, shared her thoughts on the situation. "As I breathe, I get more euphoric than usual," she said after completing a set of jumping jacks. She believes that the algae might have improved air quality in the area.
The ongoing drought in Brazil has had significant impacts on various aspects of life in Sao Paulo. From altering water bodies' appearances to affecting air quality, these changes are a stark reminder of the challenges posed by climate change.
The transformation of Ibirapuera Park's lake serves as a vivid example of how environmental factors can alter familiar landscapes. As residents adapt to these changes, they remain hopeful for solutions that address both immediate and long-term climate issues.
