Brazil's Former President Jair Bolsonaro Hospitalised Due to Abdominal Pain Linked to Past Stabbing
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was moved from northeastern Brazil to Brasilia on a medical aircraft after being hospitalised with abdominal pain. The incident occurred on Friday while he was travelling in the region. Doctors identified the pain as a bowel obstruction, linked to a 2018 stabbing incident during his presidential campaign. This injury has led to multiple hospital visits over the years.

Bolsonaro has undergone several surgeries since the attack, which happened before the 2018 presidential election. His presidency spanned from 2019 to 2022, during which he faced numerous health challenges. The former president shared on social media that this episode was particularly severe, quoting his physician who described it as "the most serious case since the attack".
Medical Transfer and Family Decision
The decision to transfer Bolsonaro to Brasilia was made by his family. He was initially admitted to a hospital in Santa Cruz, a small city in Rio Grande do Norte, and later moved to Natal, the state's capital. Doctors at Rio Grande Hospital stated that he was stable and did not require emergency surgery at that time.
Bolsonaro mentioned the possibility of another surgery in the future. Medical professionals indicated that further procedures would depend on his recovery progress. Despite being stable, his condition warranted close monitoring, leading to the transfer to Brasilia for continued care.
Political Context and Future Plans
Bolsonaro had planned a tour across northeastern Brazil to promote his party's right-wing agenda ahead of next year's presidential election. Although he is barred from running, the region is significant politically as it is traditionally supportive of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The former president's health issues have been recurrent since the 2018 stabbing incident. His ongoing medical challenges have impacted his political activities and public appearances. Despite these setbacks, Bolsonaro remains active in promoting his party's platform.
Bolsonaro's health continues to be a matter of public interest due to its implications for his political engagements. His recent hospitalisation highlights ongoing concerns about his well-being and potential impact on future political activities.
