Jair Bolsonaro Hospitalised Due to Abdominal Pain Linked to Previous Stabbing Incident
Jair Bolsonaro, the former President of Brazil, was hospitalised with abdominal pain and is expected to be moved by medical aircraft from northeastern Brazil to Brasilia. His doctors informed journalists that the pain stemmed from a bowel obstruction, a lingering effect of a 2018 stabbing incident during his presidential campaign.

Bolsonaro has frequently been in hospitals since the attack, undergoing multiple surgeries during his presidency from 2019 to 2022. "After so many similar episodes over the past few years, I had gotten used to the pain and discomfort. But this time, even the doctors were surprised," he shared on social media, noting that his longtime physician described it as "the most serious case since the attack."
Medical Transfer and Family's Role
The transfer to Brasilia was requested by Bolsonaro's family and was scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Initially admitted to a hospital in Santa Cruz, Rio Grande do Norte, he was later moved to a facility in Natal, the state's capital. Doctors at Rio Grande Hospital stated he was stable and did not require emergency surgery at that time.
Bolsonaro mentioned he might need another surgery. The decision for further procedures would depend on his recovery progress. Despite being barred from running in next year's presidential election, Bolsonaro planned a trip across northeastern Brazil to promote his party's right-wing agenda.
Political Context and Health Challenges
This region has traditionally supported President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro's health issues have been ongoing since the stabbing incident in September 2018. The conservative leader has faced numerous hospital visits due to complications from that attack.
Doctors explained that the abdominal pain was linked to long-term effects of the stabbing. They noted that despite previous episodes of discomfort, this instance was particularly severe. Bolsonaro's health remains a concern as he continues to navigate political activities.
The former president's condition highlights the lasting impact of the 2018 attack on his health. His ongoing medical challenges have been a significant aspect of his post-presidency life.
