Brazil's Federal Police Indict 20 Individuals Linked to Maceio Salt Mine Catastrophe

Brazil's federal police have indicted 20 individuals linked to rock salt mining in Maceio, a northeastern coastal city. This mining activity led to the destruction of five urban neighbourhoods, displacing tens of thousands. The charges include damage to public property and environmental violations. A police source confirmed that those charged were employees or contractors of Braskem, a major petrochemical company in the Americas.

20 Indicted in Brazil Salt Mine Disaster

Braskem, primarily owned by Petrobras and Novonor, formerly Odebrecht, has been involved in rock salt mining in the area for four decades. Investigations began when neighbourhoods started collapsing in 2018. Braskem stated it has not yet reviewed the full police report and thus refrained from commenting on those indicted. The company emphasised its cooperation with authorities and adherence to industry regulations.

Impact of Rock Salt Mining

Rock salt mining involves extracting salt from deep underground deposits. This process can leave brine-filled cavities that may collapse over time, causing the ground above to sink. Structures built on such unstable ground risk toppling. Approximately 200,000 residents in Maceio, Alagoas state capital, were affected by excessive rock salt extraction, as noted on the Brazil Senate's website.

In July 2023, Braskem reached a $356-million settlement with Maceio city officials. This settlement aims to fund structural works in the city and provide support for affected residents. In December, a closed rock salt mine partially collapsed in an evacuated area.

Company's Response and Legal Proceedings

Braskem has consistently stated its compliance with industry laws and regulations throughout the investigation. "It has always acted in compliance with industry laws and regulations, regularly informing and reporting to the competent authorities," said Braskem in a statement to The Associated Press.

The ongoing legal proceedings highlight the significant impact of industrial activities on local communities and environments. Authorities continue to investigate the extent of damage caused by rock salt mining in Maceio.

The situation underscores the need for stringent oversight and regulation of industrial operations to prevent similar incidents in the future. As investigations proceed, affected residents await further developments regarding compensation and rehabilitation efforts.
