Born Joined At The Head, This Twin Hid His True Identity From His Sister For Years– Story Will Surprise You

In an unusual case of conjoined twins and gender identity, a man who was joined at the head with his sister kept his gender a secret from her for many years. George and Lori Schappell were born in Pennsylvania in 1961 with partially fused skulls and shared 30 per cent of their brains.

According to the Daily Mail, George was assigned female at birth but came out as transgender in 2007. During an interview with The Sun in 2011, he shared, "I have known from a very young age that I should have been a boy. I loved playing with trains and hated girly outfits. I kept my desire to change sex hidden - even from Lori - for many years."

Although he did not undergo gender-affirming surgery, George presented himself as male. When he finally told his sister, she was surprised but immediately supportive, saying she was proud of his decision. She added that nothing could weaken their close bond.

At the time of their birth, doctors had no safe method to separate them. Even when surgery became possible later, the twins chose to stay together. They lived their entire lives joined at the head, facing opposite directions. Despite their connection, they had very different careers- Lori worked in a hospital, while George became a professional singer.

In a 1997 interview, George was asked if they had ever considered separation. He firmly responded, "Absolutely not. My theory is: Why fix what is not broken?"

Regarding their personal lives, George remained single, while Lori had several relationships and was once engaged. However, her fiancé tragically died in a car accident before their wedding.

George and Lori passed away in April 2024 at the age of 62. Doctors had predicted they would not live beyond 30 due to their rare condition. The siblings held the Guinness World Record for the longest-living conjoined twins and were the first same-sex conjoined twins to identify as different genders.
