Fears of a Coup Attempt in Bolivia as Troops Occupy Capital Streets
Armored vehicles crashed into the doors of Bolivia's government palace on Wednesday. A senior government official warned of a coup attempt, and President Luis Arce noted "irregular" troop deployments in the capital. Arce urged for "democracy to be respected" in a message on his X account.

Bolivian television broadcasted images of two tanks and several military personnel in front of the government palace. Former President Evo Morales also commented on X, condemning the military's presence in Murillo Square as a coup "in the making." The general commander of the Army, Juan José Zúñiga, confirmed the movement of uniformed officers and expressed his discontent, stating: "We are upset by the affront, enough is enough."
Military Presence and Reactions
María Nela Prada, minister of the presidency, described the military's actions as an "attempted coup d'état." She told local television station Red Uno that tanks were taking over the plaza and that "the people are on alert to defend democracy." This incident sparked outrage among regional leaders, including those from the Organization of American States, Chilean President Gabriel Boric, Honduras' leader, and former Bolivian leaders.
Bolivia has been experiencing increasing protests due to its economic decline. Once one of the continent's fastest-growing economies two decades ago, it is now among the most crisis-stricken. The country has also seen a significant rift within its governing party at the highest levels.
Political Tensions and Economic Decline
President Arce and his former ally, leftist icon and ex-President Morales, have been clashing over the future of Bolivia's Movement for Socialism (MAS) party ahead of the 2025 elections. This internal conflict has further complicated Bolivia's political landscape.
The general commander of the Army spoke on television about "attacks on democracy" but did not provide further details. The situation remains tense as both sides accuse each other of undermining democratic principles.
Bolivia is home to 12 million people who have been witnessing these escalating tensions. The economic downturn has exacerbated public dissatisfaction, leading to more frequent and intense protests across the nation.
The unfolding events in Bolivia highlight a critical moment for its democracy. With key figures like Arce and Morales at odds, the country's political future appears uncertain as it approaches crucial elections.
The international community is closely monitoring Bolivia's situation. Regional leaders have voiced their concerns about maintaining democratic integrity amidst these turbulent times.
The presence of armored vehicles and military personnel in front of Bolivia's government palace underscores the gravity of the current crisis. As tensions continue to rise, all eyes are on how this situation will unfold in the coming days.
The recent developments mark a significant chapter in Bolivia's political history. The actions taken by both government officials and military leaders will likely shape the nation's trajectory moving forward.
