Biden's Eid al-Adha Message: Calls For Gaza Ceasefire And Shares Plan To Combat Islamophobia

In his Eid al-Adha message to Muslims, President Joe Biden advocated for a US-backed ceasefire deal in Gaza, stating on Sunday that it was the optimal method to aid civilians suffering from the "horrors of war between Hamas and Israel."

He emphasized that numerous innocent lives had been lost, including thousands of children, and that families had been forced to flee their homes and witness the devastation of their communities. Their suffering was described as immense.

The message was shared on the social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter). Biden expressed a firm belief that the three-phase ceasefire proposal, which had been proposed by Israel to Hamas and endorsed by the UN Security Council, was the most effective way to bring an end to the violence in Gaza and to ultimately conclude the conflict.

The United States has been actively pressing for the formal acceptance of the ceasefire agreement by both Israel and Hamas. This deal, which was approved by Security Council members last week, would initiate an initial six-week cessation of hostilities. Eid al-Adha, commemorating the prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son to God, witnessed a rare period of relative calm in Gaza. This calm followed Israel's announcement of a "tactical pause" in the fighting near Rafah to facilitate the delivery of aid.

President Biden also underscored American efforts to advocate for the rights of persecuted Muslim communities, including the Rohingya in Myanmar and the Uyghurs in China. He mentioned ongoing work to bring about a peaceful resolution to the severe conflict in Sudan, where fighting has been occurring between the country's army and a rival paramilitary group since April 2023.

Domestically, Biden's message included a commitment to addressing Islamophobia, directly appealing to American Muslims, a significant voting demographic in his reelection campaign against Republican rival Donald Trump.

He announced that his administration was in the process of developing a national strategy to combat Islamophobia and related forms of bias and discrimination. This strategy is intended to protect not only Muslims but also Arab, Sikh, and South Asian Americans.
