Biden Vs. Lettuce: The Humorous Bet That Surprised Everyone!

In a unique turn of events, a vegetable has seemingly outlasted a politician referred to as a "vegetable" on Polymarket, a popular betting and prediction site.

A bet on Polymarket questioned whether a lettuce head would outlast US President Joe Biden.

Biden Vs Lettuce Who Won

Did a Head of Lettuce Outlast Joe Biden in a Viral Bet?

The bet was initiated on July 19 amid increasing pressure for Biden to step aside as the Democratic Presidential candidate. The shelf life of a lettuce head is typically 10 days, so Biden had to remain the Democratic frontrunner for 10 days to win the bet, as reported by India Today.

On Sunday, it was announced by President Biden that he would not be running in the 2024 US Presidential race, thereby ending an online poll speculating whether he would outlast a head of lettuce in the campaign.

The origin of Biden being called a "vegetable" and the outcome of the bet.

Disparagingly referred to as a "vegetable" ever since entering the 2024 US presidential race for re-election, Biden's public gaffes contributed to the slang, which describes someone so severely impaired mentally or physically that they are largely incapable of conscious responses, gaining traction on social media.

After Biden bowed out of the Presidential race on Sunday, American businessman Dave Portnoy called the sitting President a "lettuce head" and a "vegetable," as reported by The Daily Mail. Portnoy claimed Biden had been a "lettuce head for years." This term had been used repeatedly to criticize Biden, with many claiming he showed signs of being unfit for the Oval Office run. The term was also used to attack Biden's various policies in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election in the US, as per media reports.

The history of the lettuce comparison and Biden's withdrawal.

The comparison to a lettuce head also surfaced in 2022 with British Prime Minister Liz Truss, who served a brief 49-day term and became the subject of a satirical comparison to the shelf life of lettuce. The "Lettuce vs Biden" bet on Polymarket followed a similar premise. Given that the shelf life of a head of lettuce is approximately 10 days, the question was whether Joe Biden would be able to outlast the lettuce.

Starting on July 19, the bet attracted significant attention on Polymarket, which allows users to bet on a wide range of real-life events, including politics, sports, and cryptocurrency. The rules stated, "This market will resolve to 'Lettuce' if President Joe Biden officially announces his withdrawal or is confirmed to have withdrawn from the 2024 US presidential race by July 28, 2024, 11.59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to 'Biden'."

Initially, the bets were evenly split at 49:51 in favour of both Lettuce and Biden. The odds fluctuated, with the chances of Lettuce winning dipping to 41% before climbing to 78%. Despite the swings, Biden's early announcement of his withdrawal from the presidential race on July 22 meant that he did not outlast the lettuce head, which was due to expire on July 28. The result saw the lettuce emerging victorious, with bets worth $107,137 being placed.

Biden Vs Lettuce Who Won

The parallels between Biden and Liz Truss's administration are drawn. The "Lettuce vs Biden" bet drew parallels to a similar incident during the 2022 Liz Truss administration in the UK. A British tabloid newspaper, The Daily Star, had started a live stream of iceberg lettuce next to a framed photograph of Truss, asking the audience whether Truss would outlast the lettuce.

In the UK, the lettuce ultimately won the bet, as Truss resigned as prime minister in just 49 days, before the lettuce had wilted. Like Liz Truss, US President Joe Biden too couldn't outlast a lettuce head, demonstrating that sometimes in politics, even seasoned figures have a shorter shelf life than seasonal vegetables.
