Biden to Host Polish Leaders for Talks on Ukraine, NATO
President Biden will meet with Polish President Duda and PM Tusk to reaffirm support for Ukraine, discuss NATO, and strengthen energy and economic ties.
In a significant move, US President Joe Biden will host Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk for a meeting in Washington on March 12, marking the 25th anniversary of Poland's accession to the NATO Alliance. The White House announced this crucial gathering on Thursday, emphasizing the unwavering support of the United States for Ukraine's defense against Russia's aggressive war.

Reaffirming Support for Ukraine
The meeting between President Biden, President Duda, and Prime Minister Tusk will serve as a platform to reaffirm their unwavering commitment to Ukraine's defense against Russia's brutal war of conquest. With the ongoing conflict taking place across Poland's eastern border and on NATO's eastern flank, this declaration of support holds special significance. It comes at a time when political infighting within the US Congress threatens to stall the approval of a critical USD 60 billion aid package for Kyiv.
Strengthening the NATO Alliance
The meeting will underscore the ironclad commitment shared by Washington and Warsaw to the NATO Alliance, which enhances the collective security of all member nations. The three leaders will engage in coordination ahead of the upcoming NATO Summit scheduled for July in Washington. Poland's dedication to defense is evident in its allocation of approximately 4% of its GDP to defense spending last year, with plans to allocate 3.1% of its 2024 GDP for the same purpose.
Broader Agenda of Discussions
Beyond the reaffirmation of support for Ukraine and the strengthening of the NATO Alliance, the meeting will also address the US-Polish strategic energy security partnership, economic ties, and the shared commitment to democratic values. These discussions will encompass a wide range of issues that are crucial for both nations.
Political Divide in Poland
In Poland, the joint visit of President Duda and Prime Minister Tusk carries additional significance due to their contrasting political affiliations. Tusk and his liberal Cabinet assumed office in December and have been actively reversing policies implemented by their right-wing predecessors. They have accused the previous government of violating the rule of law and democratic principles. On the other hand, President Duda, who hails from the right-wing party that governed until December, has accused Tusk's government of violating Poland's constitution and employing authoritarian methods.
The meeting between President Biden, President Duda, and Prime Minister Tusk in Washington on March 12 will undoubtedly be a pivotal moment in strengthening the US-Polish partnership, reaffirming support for Ukraine, and addressing a range of critical issues that impact both nations and the broader international community.
