President Biden Attends G7 Summit in Italy, Eyes Meeting With Zelenskyy

US President Joe Biden has landed in Italy on Wednesday night to participate in the G7 Summit, a significant gathering that sees the inclusion of leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India is attending as a special invitee. A key highlight of Biden's agenda is his scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday. This meeting is set to culminate in the signing of a bilateral security agreement aimed at reinforcing US support for Ukraine for the foreseeable future.

Biden at G7, to Meet Zelenskyy

National Security Advisor (NSA) Jake Sullivan, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Italy, emphasized the commitment of the US to support Ukraine both presently and in the future. The discussions between Biden and Zelenskyy will focus on America's steadfast backing of Ukraine, particularly in defence and security cooperation. "Our goal here is straightforward. We want to demonstrate that the US supports the people of Ukraine, that we stand with them, and that we'll continue to help address their security needs not just tomorrow but out into the future," Sullivan stated.

The agreement is expected to outline a comprehensive strategy for enhancing Ukraine's defence capabilities and deterrence against future aggression. Sullivan highlighted that this move also serves as a clear message to Russia about the unwavering resolve of the US and its allies in supporting Ukraine. "If Vladimir Putin thinks that he can outlast the coalition supporting Ukraine, he's wrong," Sullivan added, indicating a strong signal of commitment towards Ukraine's sovereignty.

Aside from Ukraine, the G7 Summit will address other pressing global issues such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), climate change, and supply chain challenges. White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby underscored the unity within G7 nations to confront global challenges and renew commitments to global partnerships. Kirby also mentioned plans to discuss China's support for Russia's defence sector and its non-market policies causing global disruptions.

An additional focus of the summit will be on the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGI), aimed at offering solutions for overcoming unsustainable debt burdens among nations and boosting economic resilience. G7 leaders are also set to engage with His Holiness Pope Francis in discussions on AI, aiming to develop a unified approach towards maximizing its benefits while mitigating risks.

"This will be an important moment for our countries to come together and develop our shared approach to harnessing the benefits of AI while at the same time managing the risks to our national security and impacts that it may have to our workforces and inequality," Kirby concluded, highlighting the forward-looking agenda of the summit.
