President Biden Endorses Vice President Kamala Harris as Democratic Presidential Nominee

US President Joe Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee for the upcoming November general elections. Biden, 81, announced his decision on Sunday afternoon via a tweet, following an open letter to Americans explaining his choice not to seek re-election. He expressed his full support for Harris, his 59-year-old running mate.

Biden Backs Harris for President

"Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this," Biden said in a post on X.

Decision Amid Health Concerns

Biden's decision comes as he faces health challenges, currently isolating at his Delaware residence after testing positive for COVID-19. He plans to address the nation later this week to elaborate on his decision. In his message, Biden thanked those who supported his re-election efforts and acknowledged Harris's contributions.

"For now let me express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to see me re-elected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all this work. And let me express my heartfelt appreciation to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me," Biden said.

Focus on Presidential Duties

Biden emphasized that he will focus on fulfilling his duties as President for the remainder of his term. "It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve as your President. And while I have intended to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term," he stated in a six-paragraph open letter posted on social media.

The president's decision follows mounting pressure from senior party leaders after a poor performance in a presidential debate against Republican rival Donald Trump last month. Biden acknowledged this in his message, stating that he had decided not to accept the nomination and would focus all his energies on his presidential duties.

"My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made," Biden said.

Upcoming Elections

This announcement comes four months before Americans head to the polls on November 5. Biden's endorsement of Harris aims to unify the Democratic Party ahead of the elections. His call for unity is seen as crucial in rallying support against former US president Donald Trump.

Biden's message underscores his belief that stepping down is in the best interest of both his party and the country. By endorsing Harris, he hopes to consolidate Democratic efforts and present a strong front in the upcoming elections.

The president's decision marks a significant moment in US politics, with Harris potentially becoming the first woman of Indian and African descent to be nominated by a major party for president. This historic endorsement reflects Biden's confidence in Harris's leadership and capabilities.
