Biden's Decision Not to Run Again Draws Praise from Democrats, Criticism from Republicans

President Joe Biden's decision not to seek reelection has sparked varied reactions from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers. Democrats praised Biden for prioritising the country and the party over personal ambition, while Republicans urged him to resign, questioning his ability to serve if he cannot run for another term.

Biden Not Running: Mixed Political Reactions

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer commended Biden's selfless decision, stating, "Joe Biden has not only been a great president and a great legislative leader but he is a truly amazing human being. His decision of course was not easy, but he once again put his country, his party, and our future first." This sentiment was echoed by other Democrats who viewed Biden's move as a demonstration of his commitment to the nation.

Republican Reactions

Republicans seized on Biden's recent debate performance to criticise his capability to serve another term. House Speaker Mike Johnson stated, "If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough." Rep. Tom Emmer also called for Biden's resignation, tweeting that if the Democratic Party deemed him unfit for reelection, he should step down immediately.

Biden’s former chief of staff, Ron Klain, urged Democrats to rally behind Vice President Kamala Harris as Biden’s successor. Klain emphasised on social media that it was time to end political games and unite behind Harris, stating, "Let's get real and win in November." Despite this call for unity, initial statements from many Democrats did not mention Harris.

Democratic Endorsements

Some Democrats are advocating for an open process in selecting the next presidential nominee. Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin expressed his commitment to supporting a candidate capable of defeating Donald Trump, without explicitly endorsing Harris. "Now the Democratic Party must unite behind a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump and keep America moving in the right direction. I will do everything in my power to help that effort," Durbin said.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas praised Biden for putting the country over personal ambition and suggested openness to other potential candidates besides Harris. He stated that while Harris is a leading candidate, "we should be open to all talented individuals who wish to be considered."

Support for Kamala Harris

Despite some calls for an open selection process, many Democrats quickly endorsed Harris. Leaders of two major Democratic House caucuses, Reps. Pramila Jayapal and Annie Kuster, endorsed Harris on Sunday afternoon. Jayapal highlighted Harris's ability to campaign effectively against Donald Trump and support down-ballot Democrats.

The Congressional Black Caucus also endorsed Harris through its political action committee. The Black Caucus had supported Biden since the debate last month despite calls from other Democrats for him to step aside. Several Democratic senators, including Patty Murray, Mark Warner, Chris Murphy, and Mazie Hirono, also expressed their support for Harris.

International Reactions

Biden's announcement resonated globally as well. Former President Barack Obama praised Biden as one of America's most consequential presidents and a dear friend. Obama remarked that Biden's decision underscored his patriotism.

International leaders also acknowledged Biden's contributions. Israeli President Isaac Herzog thanked Biden for his unwavering support during times of crisis, calling him a "symbol of the unbreakable bond between our two peoples." Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese lauded Biden's leadership and noted that the alliance between their countries had never been stronger.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk recognised the difficulty of Biden's decision but affirmed that it made Poland, America, and the world safer while strengthening democracy.

The reactions from various quarters highlight the significant impact of Biden’s decision on both domestic politics and international relations.
