Biden Faces Criticism from Harris Supporters Following Her Loss to Trump
Kamala Harris's significant defeat is seen as a setback for Joe Biden, even though his name wasn't on the ballot. After Donald Trump's clear victory, some Democrats are frustrated with Biden's decision to seek reelection until summer. Concerns about his age, inflation, and border issues contributed to the party's loss of the White House.

Biden's presidency included leading the U.S. through a pandemic, supporting Ukraine against Russia, and passing a USD 1 trillion infrastructure bill. However, he will step down after one term, making way for Trump, who plans to undo many of Biden's policies. "Maybe in 20 or 30 years, history will remember Biden for some of these achievements," said Thom Reilly from Arizona State University.
Democratic Party Challenges
Andrew Yang, who ran against Biden in 2020, believes Biden should have stepped down earlier. "If he had stepped down in January instead of July, we may be in a very different place," Yang stated. He also criticized Democratic leaders for not addressing Biden's age sooner. "Why was this not coming from any Democratic leaders?" Yang questioned.
Biden ended his reelection campaign in July after a poor debate performance raised doubts about his capabilities. Polls showed many Americans were concerned about his age. In August 2023, 77% of Americans felt Biden was too old to serve another term effectively.
Harris's Campaign Struggles
Harris generated more enthusiasm than Biden but struggled to differentiate her administration from his. On ABC's "The View," she couldn't identify a decision where she would have differed from Biden. This gave the Trump campaign material to use against her.
The Harris campaign faced challenges due to its short timeline and dissatisfaction over rising costs and immigration issues. Some strategists felt an earlier primary could have helped Harris or another nominee establish differences with Biden.
Reactions and Reflections
High-ranking Democrats expressed frustration with Biden for not recognizing his limitations earlier. Three advisers to Harris's campaign voiced their concerns anonymously. They believed that anti-incumbency sentiment post-pandemic made it difficult for Democrats to win.
David Plouffe, a senior adviser to Harris, called the loss "devastating" but didn't assign blame. His post on X mentioned that the campaign "dug out of a deep hole but not enough," though it was later deleted.
Future Implications
The election results leave Republicans poised to control the White House and Senate, while the House remains undecided. Matt Bennett from Third Way described this moment as devastating for Democrats. He questioned whether an earlier withdrawal by Biden would have changed the outcome.
Some Harris supporters wished she had more time to connect with voters. Jerushatalla Pallay, a Howard University student, believed more time could have made a significant difference in her campaign.
