Biden Commemorates World AIDS Day by Displaying AIDS Memorial Quilt at the White House
President Joe Biden marked World AIDS Day by displaying the AIDS Memorial Quilt on the White House South Lawn. This was the first time the quilt was shown there. Survivors, family members, and advocates joined Biden and his wife, Jill, to honour those who died from the epidemic. Biden stressed federal support for 1.2 million Americans living with HIV, which can lead to AIDS.

"This movement is fully woven into the fabric and history of America," Biden stated. "For all the lives lost, for all those that are still alive, look at what you've already done to change the hearts and minds, to save lives across the country and around the world. That's the power of this movement."
Commemorating Lives Lost
The quilt displayed on the lawn had 124 sections, each representing individuals who died from AIDS-related illnesses. The quilt was first conceived in 1985 and publicly displayed in 1987. A red ribbon, symbolising support for those with HIV and AIDS, adorned the South Portico of the White House.
Globally, 40 million people live with HIV, as reported by the White House. Jeanne White-Ginder introduced Biden at the event. Her son, Ryan White, contracted AIDS through a contaminated blood transfusion at age 13 and passed away at 18 in 1990.
Legacy of Ryan White
White-Ginder shared that her son's experience highlighted the need to combat AIDS rather than stigmatise those affected. The Ryan White CARE Act became law in 1990. She recalled meeting Biden when he was a senator from Delaware while advocating for this legislation at the US Capitol.
Biden also acknowledged Dr Anthony Fauci's contributions. Fauci, who attended the event, was a leading infectious disease expert until his government departure in 2022. He worked on AIDS treatment but gained wider recognition for addressing COVID-19.
Efforts to Combat HIV Stigma
The Biden administration has focused on combating both the epidemic and associated stigmas. Efforts include expanding access to PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), which helps at-risk groups prevent HIV infections.
The event underscored ongoing efforts to support those living with HIV and remember those lost to AIDS-related illnesses. The administration's initiatives aim to reduce stigma and improve access to preventive measures like PrEP.
