Biden Administration Evaluates Support for Palestinian Family Reunification in the US
The Biden administration is actively considering new policies aimed at assisting Palestinians in the United States who wish to bring their family members from conflict-affected areas. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre highlighted on Wednesday that the government is "constantly evaluating policy proposals to further support Palestinians who are family members of American citizens and may want to come to the United States." While specific details on the procedures are still under discussion, these measures are intended to aid legal permanent residents or US citizens with family in regions like the Gaza Strip, where exiting has become increasingly difficult due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with local health officials reporting over 34,000 Palestinian casualties, including a significant number of children and women. Amidst these developments, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced intentions to proceed with a major military operation in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza. This move has been met with warnings from the Biden administration about potential catastrophic outcomes. Currently, Rafah serves as a refuge for an estimated 1.5 million people, more than half of Gaza's population, as the conflict shows no signs of abating.
Any initiative by the US to facilitate aid for Palestinian families would likely necessitate collaboration with Egypt. In the early stages of the conflict, Egypt opened its Rafah border crossing to allow hundreds of Americans and other foreign nationals to flee Gaza, albeit with hesitance. The prospect of an Israeli offensive raises concerns among Egypt and other Arab nations about possible displacement of Palestinians into Sinai, which they deem unacceptable.
Furthermore, the Biden administration has already implemented "deferred enforced departure" for Palestinians in the US. This directive, signed by President Biden last month, permits Palestinian immigrants facing potential expulsion from the United States to remain without fear of deportation for up to 18 months. This policy reflects an ongoing effort to provide support to Palestinian individuals and families amidst a challenging geopolitical landscape.
