Belgian Authorities Raise Terror Alert After Fatal Shooting of Two Swedes in Brussels

Belgium's capital, Brussels, was put on high alert late Monday after a fatal shooting incident involving two Swedish citizens. Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has suggested that the attack could be linked to terrorism. The OCAD anti-terror centre raised the terror alert for Brussels to its highest level and for the rest of the country to its second-highest level.

terror alert

Laura Demullier from the OCAD centre stated in an interview that their immediate priority is ensuring thousands of football fans attending the Belgium-Sweden soccer match are safely evacuated from the stadium. The match had been abandoned halfway due to this unforeseen occurrence. She confirmed that two Swedes were killed in a shooting incident in central Brussels.

The Prime Minister's Statement

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo expressed his condolences via X (formerly known as Twitter) to @SwedishPM following this harrowing attack on Swedish citizens in Brussels. He further emphasized that "As close partners, the fight against terrorism is a joint one." However, it remains uncertain whether this shooting was connected with international uproar over Israel-Hamas war.

Efforts To Apprehend The Perpetrator

"A horrible shooting in Brussels, and the perpetrator is actively being tracked down," said Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden while joining government talks at National Crisis Center. Media reports aired amateur videos showing a man firing multiple times near a station using a large weapon.

Victims' Nationality Confirmed

A police official who wished to remain anonymous confirmed that both victims were indeed Swedish nationals but declined to provide any additional details about them or their circumstances leading up to their tragic deaths. Police spokeswoman Ilse Vande Keere reported that officers arrived promptly at the scene and cordoned off the immediate neighbourhood.

Context of The Shooting

The shooting comes at a time when several European nations, including Belgium, are exercising increased vigilance due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. Brussels has also seen a surge in violence recently owing to escalating international drug trafficking.

In conclusion, this tragic incident has brought renewed focus on the threat of terrorism and its global implications. As investigations continue and authorities work tirelessly to ensure public safety, it is clear that collaboration between nations is vital in combating such threats. As Prime Minister De Croo aptly put it, "the fight against terrorism is a joint one", underlining the need for unity and cooperation at this critical juncture.
