Battered Iran Faces Uncertain Future After Conflict with Israel Amidst Economic Turmoil
The recent conflict between Iran and Israel has left Iran's leadership in a precarious position. Israeli airstrikes have severely impacted Iran's Revolutionary Guard and its missile capabilities. The strikes also targeted Iran's nuclear programme, though the extent of the damage remains uncertain. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been largely absent from public view, appearing only twice in videos during this period.

Iran's "Axis of Resistance," a coalition of allied nations and militias, has suffered significant setbacks since Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023. Despite expectations, support from China and Russia did not materialise. Domestically, Iran continues to grapple with longstanding issues such as economic sanctions, corruption, and mismanagement.
Internal Challenges and Leadership Dynamics
One critical task for Khamenei is to address potential disloyalty within the ranks, especially after Israel's intelligence successes. "There must be some sort of purge. But who will implement it? That is the question," said Hamidreza Azizi from the German Institute for International and Security Affairs. This distrust could hinder effective planning or security reforms.
On the civilian front, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has assumed a more prominent role, akin to a de facto prime minister. He has been actively communicating about the ceasefire while others in Tehran remain silent. Meanwhile, rebuilding the Revolutionary Guard poses a challenge despite having experienced officers like Gen. Esmail Qaani.
Nuclear Ambitions and Diplomatic Options
The conflict has exposed Iran's vulnerabilities, prompting discussions about its nuclear ambitions. Iran insists its nuclear programme is peaceful but has enriched uranium to 60%, close to weapons-grade. Some voices within Iran now advocate for developing a nuclear weapon, similar to North Korea's approach.
However, pursuing a nuclear weapon would be risky. Iran would need to rebuild its facilities in secrecy to avoid detection by Israeli and US intelligence. Alternatively, Khamenei might consider resuming talks with the United States for potential sanctions relief. US Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff described future negotiations as "promising."
Economic Struggles and Social Unrest
Iran faces significant domestic challenges as it deals with war-related disruptions and economic woes. The economy has been hit hard by international sanctions, corruption, and mismanagement. The power grid struggles with frequent blackouts, exacerbated by returning residents after wartime evacuations.
The war temporarily halted Tehran's stock market and currency exchange activities, pausing the rial's decline. However, once businesses resume operations fully, further currency devaluation is likely. Economic hardships have sparked unrest before, such as the 2019 protests over fuel price hikes that led to widespread violence.
Social Tensions and Future Leadership
Social tensions persist in Iran, particularly regarding women's rights and government crackdowns on dissent. The death of Mahsa Amini in 2022 led to protests against mandatory hijab laws, resulting in over 500 deaths and thousands of arrests. Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi criticised the regime in an open letter but called for peace.
Khamenei's survival raises questions about his successor and potential shifts in governance. The war may push Iran towards military-style rule rather than clerical dominance. A panel of Shiite clerics will choose Khamenei's successor, with candidates ranging from hard-liners to reformists.
The future leadership could see increased influence from military commanders within the Islamic Republic's framework. "People have been talking of a transition from clergy-dominated Islamic Republic to a military-dominated Islamic Republic," Azizi noted. This scenario appears more plausible following recent events.
