London police are investigating the alleged theft of a Banksy artwork after witnesses captured photos and videos of a man removing a red stop sign adorned with three military drones. The incident occurred on Saturday, less than an hour after the elusive street artist posted a photo of the work on his Instagram page.

Video Footage Captures the Theft

Video footage shows a man using bolt cutters to climb up on a bicycle and remove the artwork from a signpost on a street corner in the Peckham area of south London. Another man steadies the bike as the thief cuts the sign free and runs off with it in his hand. A voice on a video of the incident can be heard expressing annoyance at the theft.

Witness Accounts

A witness who wished to remain anonymous, referred to as Alex, told the PA news agency that a small crowd of people had gathered to view the artwork and stood by as the theft unfolded. Alex expressed confusion and bemusement at the situation, noting that car horns were honked in response to the incident.

Police Appeal for Information

The Metropolitan Police have appealed for help from anyone with information about the reported theft. As of late Saturday afternoon, no arrests had been made.

Local Council Calls for Artwork's Return

Jasmine Ali, deputy leader of the local borough council, called for the stolen artwork to be returned. Ali emphasized that the piece should not have been removed and expressed a desire for its return so that the entire community could enjoy Banksy's brilliant work. The stop sign has since been replaced.

Banksy's Thought-Provoking Art

Banksy's thought-provoking and satirical art often addresses themes related to war and social issues. Many of his followers on Instagram interpreted the stolen artwork as a call for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.
