Bangladesh Seeks Alternatives To Indian Potato And Onion Imports Amid Rising Tensions

Bangladesh is exploring alternatives to its traditional sources for importing potatoes and onions, considering potential suppliers such as Pakistan, China, Turkey, and other countries. This shift comes as tensions between Bangladesh and India rise, fueled by trade issues and strained diplomatic relations, particularly regarding alleged atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh, as reported by Times Of India.

India has long been the largest supplier of onions and potatoes to Bangladesh. In the fiscal year 2023-24, India exported approximately 7.24 lakh tonnes of onions, up from 6.71 lakh tonnes the previous year, worth around USD 145 million. However, increasing prices in the Indian market have led Bangladesh to reconsider its dependency on its neighbor, especially as the cost of essential commodities like onions and potatoes has surged.

Until now, Bangladesh has primarily relied on India for its potato imports, while onions have been sourced from India, Myanmar, and smaller quantities from Pakistan, China, and Turkey. However, as Indian market prices continue to rise, Bangladesh's Trade and Tariff Commission (BTTC) has identified other potential suppliers to ensure a steady supply of these crucial items at more stable prices, as reported by Times Of India.

The BTTC has proposed importing potatoes from Germany, Egypt, China, and Spain, with the following projected costs per tonne:

  • Germany: USD 250-500
  • Spain: USD 300-400
  • China: USD 550-700
  • Egypt: USD 750-800

Onions, on the other hand, could be sourced from:

  • China: USD 430-650 per tonne
  • Pakistan: USD 500-650 per tonne
  • Turkey: USD 600-700 per tonne

These alternative sources could help stabilize the supply of potatoes and onions while addressing the rising prices that have significantly impacted Bangladesh. The BTTC has already begun discussions with importers to encourage the exploration of these new options, as per media reports.

The shift away from India comes amidst increasing concerns over India's export restrictions and rising commodity prices. According to Bangladeshi officials, India's trade policies, including export discouragement measures and price hikes, have led to a 10.59% monthly increase in potato and onion prices, with an annual rise of 131%.

This move by Bangladesh marks a significant turn in its trade relations with India. Once a close trading partner, the two countries have seen a decline in bilateral trade since Bangladesh's interim government assumed power. The latest steps to find alternative suppliers for essential commodities underscore the growing economic and political challenges between the neighbouring nations.

As Bangladesh continues to diversify its suppliers, the shift may have broader implications for regional trade dynamics and India's agricultural export sector.
