Bangladesh Pulls The Plug On Key Deal With India: What It Means For Northeast's Internet!

India's ambitions to improve mobile internet connectivity in its northeastern states have hit a significant roadblock after Bangladesh's interim government cancelled a crucial "bandwidth transit" deal.

The agreement, which was expected to facilitate high-speed internet from Singapore to India's northeastern regions, has now been scrapped by Bangladesh's Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), as reported by Times Of India.

This decision is expected to have a major impact on internet services in the region, as it was initially part of a plan that involved routing bandwidth through the Akhaura border. Indian telecom giant Bharti Airtel was collaborating with Bangladeshi firms Summit Communications and Fiber@Home to establish this connectivity.

The plan aimed to enhance digital infrastructure in the northeast, a region that often faces connectivity challenges due to geographical and infrastructural limitations. However, the BTRC's decision to cancel the agreement has raised concerns, as it directly affects India's ability to improve digital connectivity in the region.

Bangladesh's Concerns and the Political Context

The Bangladesh government has justified the cancellation by citing the lack of economic benefits to the country and the significant advantage it would have offered India in terms of connectivity. The BTRC has expressed that the bandwidth transit deal could potentially harm Bangladesh's aspirations of becoming a regional internet hub.

Additionally, the move has sparked discussions about political motivations. The companies involved in the deal, Summit Communications and Fiber@Home, have close ties with Bangladesh's ruling Awami League party, with Summit Communications' chairman, Mohammad Farid Khan, being the brother of a senior leader from the party. The cancellation could be seen as a strategic attempt by the Yunus government to reduce the influence of these companies and tighten its grip on the telecommunication sector, as reported by Times of India.

A Setback for Regional Connectivity

India's northeastern states, which are geographically distant from the rest of the country, have long struggled with subpar internet services, as per media reports. The bandwidth transit deal was a significant step toward improving their connectivity. With the cancellation, the region could experience delays in improving its digital infrastructure, which is crucial for business, education, and government services.

As tensions between the two neighbouring nations continue, this latest move by Bangladesh is likely to add to the ongoing discussions about regional cooperation and competition in the digital space. The cancellation of the agreement could also have wider implications on bilateral relations, especially in areas concerning infrastructure, trade, and technology.
