Bangladesh Police File Case Against Hindu Monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Amid Clash

In a significant development in Bangladesh, a case has been filed against Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das and hundreds of his followers, following clashes between his supporters and police in Chattogram. The incident, which escalated into violence, occurred after Das was arrested on sedition charges on November 25, as reported by India Today.

The case, filed by Enamul Haque, an activist from the Hefazat-e-Islam group, accuses Das and 164 identified individuals, along with up to 500 unnamed people, of attacking Haque at the Chittagong court on November 26.

Haque, who claims to have been assaulted by Das' followers for wearing traditional attire, suffered serious injuries, including a fractured arm and head wounds, which required hospital treatment. He explained the delay in filing the case due to his prolonged recovery from the assault. The tensions surrounding Das' arrest have sparked widespread protests across Bangladesh, further intensifying the political and social unrest in the country, as reported by India Today.

The violence initially began after Das, a former member of the ISKCON movement and spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sommilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote, was apprehended at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. His arrest triggered nationwide protests, including a particularly fierce demonstration in Chattogram, where Assistant Government Prosecutor Saiful Islam Alif tragically lost his life.

Earlier, the police had registered multiple cases, including one on November 27 at the Kotwali Police Station, following the clashes related to Das' detention. A subsequent case was filed on December 3 by a local businessman who accused political activists and ISKCON members of assaulting him near Rangam Cinema Hall, as per media report.

The tensions surrounding Das' arrest have not only led to violence but have also strained diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh. Since the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the formation of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus in August, attacks on Hindus and the arrest of figures like Das have exacerbated the growing discord between the two neighboring nations.

As of now, Das remains in custody, with his bail hearing postponed until January 2 due to a lack of legal representation, as per media reports. The case and the ongoing unrest continue to draw attention both within Bangladesh and internationally, as the situation remains unresolved, with the potential for further political and social ramifications.
